M5 Coke bottle feedback

For my A12 assignment I have come up with 3 designs for the M5 Coke bottle product. I would like some feedback on which idea I should make my final product.

Arrows This design originally started as a oil pastel drawing on red paper. I have modified the shape of the canvas to fit the bottle, and made the arrows different weights to promote a feeling of moving.

Party On

This idea initially started as a scrape of ink on a page. I thought that this looked like a little person, and then developed it into a party scene.

Hand Print

This started with my painting my hand red, adding blue stripes down the centre of my fingers and then printing it onto a page.

Please give comments on which design you think is most appropriate for the M5 coke bottle. Cheers in advance.

Idea 1
I like the first one the best by far, but I fear it may be too simple of a design. Also, the harsh edges of the arrows combined with the smooth curve of the background of the product information doesn't look right to me. Maybe try a more straight-edged product information section. Or even an arrow as a background instead of a curve.

I also think the piece might look a bit more cohesive if all the arrows were the same weight.

Idea 2
Your second idea runs a close second for the best, but I think your first one is a little bit better. I think with a bit of tweaking this idea could be the one to go with more than the first, mainly because there is a concept behind it whereas the first one is just arrows.

Try making the surface of the bottle black and reversing the colours of the men. I think it would look a lot more of a complete design then. Or why don't you try combining your first two ideas into one, by having the arrows subtly placed in the background?

Idea 3
I think your third idea doesn't look enough like a hand, plus it's not really 'getting' the idea of vector images. It smacks of a bitmap image live-traced into a vector program, which usually produces too complicated designs.

I think what's happened here is the complete opposite - you've removed too much of the hand and now it looks a bit too abstract. I think your first two ideas are a lot stronger.

To reiterate; try combining ideas 1 and 2 and see what happens. Or alternatively idea 2 with a black background and white men instead. Finally, try a more straight edged background on idea 1 where the product information is.

@ Craig. You would like #1. It's got arrows on it!

Definitely the first one is the standout piece of the three you've created, I think it got so much more to it than the other 2. Maybe introduce some kind of texture into the piece, or something opacic behind all the arrows to give the whole look more of an aestheticly pleasing feel.

I think on the eye it's quite harsh, even with the colours used; with so many points being shown thrown around, I think you should try make them abit closer, creating more of a patterned effect rather than being abit spouse.

I also agree with craig's point on that the harsh edges of the arrows don't feel right mixed with the smooth curve of the background. Try intoducing that kinda shape into your actual piece.

I really like Ideas 1 and 2.

Idea 1 is my favourite. The colours are really vibrant which is something I personally like. Breaking the pink up with the arrows works really well, but like Craig says the edges are a little harsh.

Idea 2 I like because of the little men that appear to be dancing. It brings some 'fun' factor into the design while not losing any of the effect that the first idea brought.

Out of the three designs that you have created I am drawn to the first design. It probably could be improved by using arrows with curved corners to complement the swish. The colour combination you have used is effective but a little feminine.

I realy like idea one, its eye catchy but idea 2 has potenshal, maybe try merge them like Craig said and see what happens.

You may have probably made your mind up on the final design. I agree with the majority who say number 1.

Although I would try to use a lot of different styles for the arrow illustrations, if you have time that is!

I do like what you have done with the characters in number 2 they look like they are having a great time on "coke".

I would make each one just slightly different, to give the impression you haven't just copied and pasted them all.

Number 3 needs a lot more substance to it, I like the idea of the hand around the bottle, but it needs to look more like a hand as Craig B says.

I do like your first design with the different arrows but like Craig says this may be a bit too simple.

I definitely prefer idea 2 because it is a little bit different. It may look good if you experiment with different colours too.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it looks as though the arrows have it. I have adapted the design so show more contrast between the straight and curvy edges, as Craig B suggested, and have improved the renders of the bottle.

Vibrant colours are what I like about this design, as Sue has mentioned. I think that a simple design can often be the best, and many of the original bottle effectively have a pattern on them.

Using any colour, never mind 'feminine' colours is a bit of a departure to me, so I will be looking to make the best of it :)

I couldn't end the year or, as it is now, start the year without a comment on the favorite second years journal!

I definitely prefer your first design it has more impact than the other designs and would stand out on the shelf. I think it would be worth trying to develop it further and maybe post 3 developed versions for feedback (not sure on the deadline though). Slight variations arrow style, size, even direction? But the beauty is in its simplicity so don't compromise on that.

The favorite second year's journal? As in your favorite, or the class's favorite? I feel privileged to have such an accolade bestowed upon me.

I'm glad you picked the first design, Michelle, as that is the final one I did. There is also a rather brightly coloured website explaining the process of how it came about. It is in the 'My Websites' section of my blog, or at www.juliandyer.net/cocacolam5/
